To fulfill their responsibilities for providing public bus, trolley, trackless trolley, rapid transit, and (since 1964) commuter rail services to the Boston metropolitan area, the MTA and MBTA have been administered respectively by a board of public trustees and board of directors, both served by a general manager. The general manager has met monthly or oftener with MBTA department heads. Series is created by the general manager to administer these meetings.
